We tried clapping out the basic African rhythm with Marsalis which was tricky. Some of these software geeks had trouble with it too. Marsalis discusses his book on jazz, Moving to Higher Ground: How Jazz Can Change Your Life.

Marsalis was at the White House today (article here) but I'll also post a talk he gave at Google where he explains some jazz basics and even recommends some great albums (Blues for a New Millennium, Marcus Roberts; Blues in Orbit, Duke Ellington, and a Coltrane blues album I didn't catch, I think it was Blue Trane. I'll go ahead and recommend John Coltrane's Africa, NOT the remastered sessions release which reordered the songs that formed an organic whole on that album, just a total mistake).
