young makers

The joy of making things is something many homeschoolers know all about. Two video recaps of the recent Bay Area and Detroit Maker Faires and a clip of a fire-breathing construction:

PBS looked at Maker Faire in this saccharine report that does give an overview and background. Even if they get the maker sheds onto school campuses, and its a great idea, there will be graded activities and overly-organized approaches in many schools and many kids can only dream of the open-ended exploration these suburban kids experience.

And what  happened to shop classes?  Perhaps these recent articles give us a clue. If schools were a supportive learning service for kids and families, we'd have lots of real makers in every community, making lives worth living and enjoying creating things.
