The Wall Street Journal has an article up on handwriting and the brain. I'll note that handwork can be done in many ways: from sewing to sculpture to beading. All handwork builds the brain somehow; the article and video focus on phonetic writing. The video just assumes the learning struggle between parent and child is natural and ok. A 4-year old child being taught writing is quite young even by current pedadgogical practices. Increasingly, successful systems like Finland delay the start of schooling.
